Weddings in the United States Virgin Islands
There are so many options to consider
when planning your tropical wedding! Choose a seaside ceremony barefoot on the sand or a sunset service out at sea. Marry in a lush hilltop garden or a luxury villa with spectacular view of the harbor. There are several historic churches and synagogues for those who prefer a traditional setting and underwater options for the more untraditional.
An island wedding planner can manage all of the details and knows the local florists, photographers, caterers and other wedding professionals that will fit your needs. They can help with the logistics of travel and accommodations for you and your guests as well as your honeymoon plans. There are several wedding companies available, and many resorts offer a variety of wedding and honeymoon packages.
You will need to do a bit of planning in advance to comply with marriage laws in the U.S. Virgin Islands. No blood test is required, but there is a $100 application fee and a $100 marriage license fee. If any of the parties are divorced, you must provide a certified copy of the divorce decree or a notarized affidavit stating when the divorce was granted. Visit the Department of Tourism’s website www.usvitourism.com for a downloadable application and mail it with a certified check or money order to the Superior Court of the Virgin Islands, P.O. Box 70, St. Thomas, U.S.V.I. 00804. There is an 8-business day waiting period once the paperwork is received. Licenses must be picked up in person at the Courthouse.
Judges are available to perform civil ceremonies Monday through Friday by appointment for a fee of $400. Contact the Superior Court of the U.S. Virgin Islands at 340-774-6680 on St. Thomas or St. John and 340-778-9750 on St. Croix.
WELLNESS Most resorts offer spas and fitness centers and there are many independent day spas to choose. Treat yourself to a luxurious body treatment such as a facial, soak, wrap or scrub, or soothe your muscles with a relaxing massage right on the beach.
Most spas also offer full and half-day combination packages. To give your look a bit of polish, nail studios are plentiful, and there are many hair salons.
HEALTH While visiting the U.S. Virgin Islands, it’s comforting to know that medical assistance is available wherever you go. Over the counter health and personal care products are readily available at any local drugstore or grocery store, and licensed pharmacists can fill your prescription needs on any island. For more serious concerns, St. Thomas and St. Croix both have comprehensive hospital facilities and St. John has a community healthcare center. In addition, general practitioners, specialists, dentists and walk-in clinics are available, and many accept a wide range of insurance. Chiropractors and holistic alternatives can be found as well as natural food groceries.
Medical tourism has definitely seen an upswing on St. Thomas in recent years with the opening of the Charlotte Kimelman Cancer Institute
(340) 775-5433, the newest division of the Schneider Regional Medical Center. Offering an up-to-date outpatient diagnostic and treatment center, it serves cancer patients and their families from the entire Eastern Caribbean and beyond.
KEEPING FIT With an abundance of tempting foods to try and so many relaxing beaches to lounge the day away, avoid taking home a few extra pounds by making fitness a part of the fun of your holiday experience!
There are plenty of opportunities for keeping fit during your stay. Hiking trails offer an up-close look at nature, and walking tours of colonial ruins or historic districts can be a fascinating and informative way to spend the day. Water sports can also be an exhilarating workout. Those who prefer a more structured fitness regimen can take advantage of daily, weekly and monthly passes offered at many local gyms and resort fitness centers with exercise classes, steam rooms, pools, free weights, training equipment, changing rooms and showers. Several resorts also have tennis courts available by the hour.
Fitness can also be a great way to social. A free Tai Chi class is held on the lawn at Yacht Haven Grande on St. Thomas each Saturday at 9 a.m. Several certified instructors offer zumba workouts at various island locations. Check with your concierge to find a class to fit your schedule.
